La Colombe announced Best Restaurant in Africa

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2024 have just been announced, and Cape Town’s own La Colombe made it into the top 50.

On the La Colombe Instagram page you can see a video of the moment they were announced Best Restaurant in Africa, and 49th best in the world. Goosebumps!

James Gaag, head chef at La Colombe
“I’m very lucky to have such a dedicated, self-motivated and passionate team who all have the same dreams and all work towards the same goal. I could not be prouder of them for all their hard work and passion. These achievements are all theirs!”
— James Gaag

The win took me down memory lane, to my wife’s birthday three years ago, which we celebrated in style at atop the Silvermist Wine Estate.

At the time, their Summer Menu was charged at R695 - a bargain compared to current prices! But what must be taken into account, was that this was still in the pandemic times, and restaurants were struggling, and needing to reduce their prices to get bums in seats.

Currently, La Colombe has a Winter Lunch Special. For R1095 you get served an 8-course menu. Book here.

Their most famous dish though is their tuna ‘la colombe’, which is a blind tasting. The story of this iconic tin of tuna which has become a true La Colombe trademark, was told in this Food 24 video - it’s well worth a watch!

This was their Karoo lamb - and we arguably have the best lamb in the world available right here in South Africa, so what a treat to have it perfectly prepared as well - you can’t go wrong! The lamb was paired with pumpkin and chermoula.

Shawn Godfrey is an entrepreneur based in Cape Town, South Africa. After the Covid-19 lockdown saw his business in financial distress, cooking was the creative outlet that helped to keep him sane. To keep track of his recipes, and encourage friends and families to join him, he starts his instagram account The Roasted Dad.

Fast-forward to late 2021 - on a whim Shawn (encouraged by his wife Lianne) enters MasterChef South Africa. It is a crazy time of life: running a 200 people business and struggling to keep it profitable, two small children with a third on the way, and about to move into a new house. But when Shawn gets selected to be one of the 20 contestants participating in the fourth season of MasterChef South Africa, he decides to go all in. Leaving his 7-month-pregnant wife to look after their then three and one-year-old children, he battles it out and comes back home five weeks later with the trophy and a million rand prize money in his pocket.

It all started with an Instagram account, but The Roasted Dad is so much more now. Shawn has stayed his entrepreneurial self and whilst he hosts Private Dinner Parties and Cook-with-Me Demos, does Restaurant Take-Overs, he still runs the lighting company and several other businesses.

On his blog, Shawn shares Restaurant Reviews and Accommodation Reviews, and gives an insight into the wild and wonderful life he leads together with his wife Lianne, and their three children Aiden (6), Olivia (4) and Harvey (2).
