Easy but Delicious Chocolate Torte

A Rich Chocolate Torte that’s easy to make

The difference between a torte and a cake is that a torte generally does not include flour. This one is made with a mix of flour and ground almonds, which gives it a rich and nutty texture. It is best to use a high quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa or more), although when I made it the first time I used a ‘normal’ slab of dark chocolate and it still tasted delicious.

Ingredients to make the Chocolate Torte

  • 200g butter

  • 200g chocolate

It is best to use a high quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa or more), although when I made it the first time I used a ‘normal’ slab of dark chocolate and it still tasted delicious.

  • 4 large eggs

  • 200g castor sugar

  • 50g cake flour

  • 50g ground almonds
You can also use a spice and nut grinder to grind up whole almonds.

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder

How to make the Chocolate Torte

  1. Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit).

  2. Cover the base of a springform with baking paper and use some butter to grease the bottom and sides.

  3. Cut the butter into blocks and melt into a pan.

  4. Break the chocolate into pieces and melt into the butter, stirring occassionally.

  5. Beat the eggs and sugar together for 5 mins until it is thick like custard.

  6. Pour the chocolate and butter mixture into the whisked egg and sugar, then mix together.

  7. Sift the the flour into the mixture and add the ground almonds and salt.

  8. Pour the mixture into the springform and bake for 35-40 mins.

  9. You will know your chocolate torte is ready when you see a crust forming over the top.

  10. Remove the torte from the oven and leave to get to room temperature on an oven rack, before removing from the springform, to avoid it falling apart.

  11. For a finishing touch, dust the chocolate torte with some cocoa through a sieve.
Enjoy! Please tag me on Instagram if you’ve made this recipe, I’d love to see it!

Serving Suggestions

The chocolate torte pairs well with vanilla ice cream and cherries. You can also whip up a chocolate sauce if you’re keen for a very rich chocolatey version!

Gluten-free Chocolate Torte

You can make this chocolate torte gluten free by using 100 g of ground almonds and no flour. This will increase the nutty taste of the torte, but it will still be delicious!

Dairy-Free Chocolate Torte

If you want the chocolate torte dairy free, you can replace the butter with coconut oil.

About Shawn Godfrey

Shawn Godfrey is an entrepreneur based in Cape Town, South Africa. After the Covid-19 lockdown saw his business in financial distress, cooking was the creative outlet that helped to keep him sane. To keep track of his recipes, and encourage friends and families to join him, he starts his instagram account The Roasted Dad.

Fast-forward to late 2021 - on a whim Shawn (encouraged by his wife Lianne) enters MasterChef South Africa. It is a crazy time of life: running a 200 people business and struggling to keep it profitable, two small children with a third on the way, and about to move into a new house. But when Shawn gets selected to be one of the 20 contestants participating in the fourth season of MasterChef South Africa, he decides to go all in. Leaving his 7-month-pregnant wife to look after their then three and one-year-old children, he battles it out and comes back home five weeks later with the trophy and a million rand prize money in his pocket.

It all started with an Instagram account, but The Roasted Dad is so much more now. Shawn has stayed his entrepreneurial self and whilst he hosts Private Dinner Parties and Cook-with-Me Demos, does Restaurant Take-Overs, he still runs the lighting company and several other businesses.

On his blog, Shawn shares Restaurant Reviews and Accommodation Reviews, and gives an insight into the wild and wonderful life he leads together with his wife Lianne, and their three children Aiden (6), Olivia (4) and Harvey (2).
